Henri Rousseau

A french painter which is most famous among all Naive artists, Rousseau came from a poor background and went through a succession of menial jobs before turning to art late in life. While working as a latter, he painted as a hobby and in 1893 he took an early retirement to pursue his artistic ambitions. Completely self taught, he copied many of the individual elements in his pictures from book illustrations using a pantograph. But it is his dreamlike combination of images and intuitive sense of colour which gave his work its unique appeal.

He began exhibiting his paintings in the mid 1880. Though he never really achieved great success, his guileless personality won him many friends in the art industry such as Picasso, Apollinaire and Delaunay. His works would be of important influence to the surrealists in time to come.
